To understand Australian History, and to be able to enjoy it to the full, I maintain that we must start to learn it from the very beginning. As almost half of all Australian towns and villages are named after towns and villages in Ireland, and a very large percentage of Australians have their ancestral roots in Ireland, and in the interest of Australian History, I had to write this book.
I had no idea that my research was going to record the bitterness that exists between some Irishmen and Englishmen, or some Catholics and Protestants, right up to the present moment.
An Historical Author cannot take sides, he can only record the facts as he finds them. I wish to make it quite clear that I support Irishmen, Englishmen, Scotchmen, Orangemen, Catholic or Protestant equally, although I must admit that I have developed a lot of sympathy for the Irish cause since doing my research, but in no way can I, or would I, support the terrorist activities of the Irish Republic Army, the IRA, in Ireland.
I ask you to join me in a little prayer that one day Irishmen, whether they be of the South or be of the North, will let bygones be bygones and live together in peace for the sake of the wonderful little country of Ireland and all of mankind. James McClelland, OAM
