Guilty - Part One

Guilty - Part One Image

I was eleven and Dad told me he was taking us to Australia. Yes, I had heard of the place - that's where they sent people who stole things! I didn't want to go. I had just been kissed by a girl who wasn't a relative and I was in love. But go I did. I thought I would at least fit in okay as I moved from town to town. I had seen pictures of Australians and they had curly hair like me, so I wouldn't be teased anymore. WRONG! We went to a place called Chinchilla and there were lots of children with curly hair, but they were black and I was pink. They made my life hell and this was to continue on into my teens as Dad moved from town to town. Australia in the fifties was not multicultural like it is now and I stood out like a sore thumb.

Then I did something which changed my life. I fell in love with a man. NO! Not like that; like this - that man was Harry Belafonte - I copied him and became a Calypso singer. Now the girls liked me and the lads stopped bashing me and just wanted to be my friends to gather up any leftovers. From being set upon to being set after. From Calypso singer to pop star.

This is my story......
